St. C girls help build bike trails for Paralyzed Veterans of America at Pocahontas State Park

Uploaded on November 18, 2014

We had a whole pile (23++) of volunteers out working on the trails on Saturday and some special guests from the PVA. We’ll have a lot more photos and video but I wanted to share a flavor of the day from the perspective of my daughter, a St. Catherine’s – here are her pics. (The first few look like squares on the preview but they’re actually panoramas showing a full curve of trail. – be sure to check them out)

It was a terrific experience!! Doug & Rich were great hosts. They not only encouraged and helped set the tone of wonder for everyone, they mined every second for possible improvements or modifications. In the end, it turned out that the trail made its own friends quickly and everyone had a good time.

The PVA guys were fantastic. After a short investigative lap and a few repairs (to one of the bikes) they were off – talking about racing each other and rolling through rock gardens like the pros they are. Eventually, Rich and Doug had a turn. Watching them rock a hand cycle was very cool. Rich was trying to figure out balance points and other details that he could put into the next design. And we agreed that, with a little modification, even our existing single track could be opened to experienced hand cyclists with modern mountain bikes.

But the very best thing was watching a whole bunch of riders from newbies to seasoned pros riding together, enjoying the day and the trail. Words cannot begin to describe it. This video, though short, comes close.

You should be all really proud that this trail exists. For us at the park it is a dream come true.

Thank you for making this possible!

Phil Walker – President Friends of Pocahontas Park
