Ride Center Updates

Uploaded on May 25, 2015

Update

There is currently a logging operation going on in Pocahontas State Park north of Swift Creek Reservoir that is expected to last until late June.  While some of the new trails are complete and rideable, we’ve been asked for the safety of everyone involved to stay out of the first until the selective logging operation has been completed.

Buttermilk East

This past Winter, half a mile of new trail was added to the James River Park.  Extending East from the 21st Street stairs at the end of Buttermilk, Buttermilk East provides an off-road connection from Buttermilk to the Floodwall making for safer and more fun access to the trails at Ancarrow’s East.

Gateway Trails

The beginner, family and hand-cycle friendly Gateway Trails were the first trails added to the Swift Creek Trail System at Pocahontas State Park.  Gateway Trail A is finished and open.  Gateway Trail B still needs some work after a long wet Winter.  The Gateway Trails can be found on the Phase 1 map.

Bell Built Trail

Last Summer we won a $33k grant from Bell Helmets.  This helped us create the Bell Built Trail.  Designed and built by Randy Spangler, the Bell Built Trail opened in mid-May.   It’s a one-‐way directional, descending, easier difficulty “flow” trail with a firm trail surface, rollers and berms.  It’s Segment 22 on the map.

New Trails

Ed Sutton from Trail Dynamics is currently working on the next set of trails at Pocahontas.  Funded through $100,000 in donations, these 4.5 miles of trails are expected to be complete by July.  The trails include one-way directional, ascending “singletrack” trail, “bump & pump” style trail, and descending “flow” trail.

The new trails are Segments 3, 4 & 6 on the Phase 3 map, 15a on the Phase 4 map and 16 on the Phase 5 map.

We hope that you’ll enjoy Richmond’s newest trail this Summer and consider making a donation to the RVA Ride Center so that we can continue to add more trails to the Richmond Regional Ride Center.
